Move: flat pack protest gear
Move is a speculative business concept intended to help advocacy organizations mobilize the explosive new interest in participation in protest movements since the 2016 election.
Traditionally, host organizations provide preprinted signs which clearly state the objectives of the protest in a television ready format. This is effective, but often creates a cold or corporate ambiance. Other times, it is left to protestors to create their own signs. The results are often colorful, but fail to drive a coherent message.
Move protest gear was designed to allow for individual expression, while also sending a clear political message.
break through the noise
Move offers a variety of innovative flat packable protest items like megaphones, collapsable posters, and sky lanterns. All of them are fully customizable with calls to action, logos, and protest songs, chants, and slogans.
Move engaged in three speculative partnerships with today's active protest movements. The Democratic Socialists of America used the customizer to create a case of quick deploy flat pack megaphones. Black Lives Matter used our sky lanterns to great effect in a nighttime protest vigil. And Refuse Fascism went all out, commissioning a customization cart that allowed participants to design their own messaging (see video below).
Move was a group effort between my colleagues Will Crum and Alexia Cohen. We all collaborated on the brand direction and product direction. I was key in prototyping and documenting the sky lantern product, and I also led the graphic design and pacing of the final presentation.
